Welcome! I’m delighted you are here. If you’re familiar with Scripture you probably already realize that the basic thought behind this blog comes from Hebrews 11:8-10:

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.”

Every human heart longs for spiritual reality, for God, though our collective spiritual pursuit often takes many different forms. The sheer volume of human philosophies, religions, and worldviews attests to this fact. Through the mists of our fragmented existence we all see the outline of a new world where weapons of war have been turned into tools of production and our children are no longer taught to fight but to love, where no one goes hungry and righteousness flows like a river from the heights of God’s love and grace. The ancient vision of brotherhood given to the world through the Jewish prophets has become, in the words of Will Durant, the “precious and unforgotten heritage of countless generations.”

Abraham may have been the prototype, but he is certainly not the only one to have heard this call and gone out in search of that City. Can you imagine the impact it must have made on the people of first-century Palestine to hear Jesus say that the kingdom of God had arrived, that it was not far away in time or space but very near, even at the door of their hearts? That message has not changed and it is what this blog is all about. In Search of the City is for every fellow sojourner who is driven by the same burning desire to see the Kingdom come “on earth as it is in heaven.”

To start with, here are the five most popular posts I’ve written so far:

6 responses to Welcome!

  1. I just found you through your recent post on unity. I am overcome with joy!!! There is a small band beginning to see this in my area and we are so encouraged to see others! Hallelujah and glory to God!!

    • Wonderful, Jessie. I’m glad you found your way here. Be sure to get a free copy of my eBook if you haven’t already (you can do so by subscribing here). I think you’ll enjoy it.

  2. Josh, I admire and share your yearning for the holy city of the living God, the new Jerusalem, which is being prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband, the Lord Jesus Christ. I have been blessed to have read nearly all of the 25 favorite books on your list and been inspired by each of the four biographies you recommended. I thought you might also enjoy reading some of the teaching on our website http://www.ChristCrucified.info. In Him, Peter

  3. Hi Josh,

I happened across your blog through a mutual friend on Facebook. I have not looked at all or your blog posts or your ebook, but might read the ebook.

Basically, I was just writing with encouragement and to say I am encouraged and inspired by the path you have chosen and are trying to follow and I hope you continue to receive the courage, strength, and grace to continue it.

You might take it with a grain of salt because I am probably not even a Christian. Of course Jesus was not a Christian either. I think Jesus would recognize me as a follower and if I ever met him we would have a huge laugh at the idiot I have been and mostly still am, and then I would joyfully go make amends for the things I have done as an idiot (with scales over my eyes).

So while you might take it with a grain of salt, my hope is that even a likely non-Christian (me) recognizing someone truly following the indwelling spirit (you) might be even more meaningful.

Any which way I felt compelled from your sharing to recognize and ever so feebly support the path you are on, following your indwelling spirit. Thank you for indulging me and reading it.

I am not encouraging you to look at my stuff, but I do have a couple blogs that I occasionally post things on if you were interested.

It looks like you will be plenty busy though with your new addition coming, as seen through our mutual friend on FB. Congratulations!

I had originally planned to send this via email and disclose our mutual friend and not post it publicly as a comment, but I did not see that as an option. Feel free to remove it.

    • Hey, Chad!

Now I’m intrigued on who our mutual friend is. 🙂 Feel free to email me anytime, about our friend or anything else. My address is jlawson691@gmail.com. I appreciate your kind words and encouragement.
